Why does the Palin-McCain campaign keep repeating the same lies over and over? You know the ones: Palin is a reformer when she isn’t; a fiscal conservative when she left her mayoral office with a $22 million deficit; against the bridge to nowhere when she actually campaigned for it, against corruption when in fact she is closely associated with indicted senator Ted Stevens and freely uses her office in vendettas against her enemies; that she has foreign policy experience when she has ZERO…that McCain is a maverick when, in fact, he voted with Bush over 90% of the time, that he’s the “change agent” and an outsider when he has been in Washington almost 30 years and is very much an insider; that Iraq was involved in 9/11 when it wasn’t.
Then there are the smears against Obama - he’s a celebrity, as if that is bad; he pushed sex education to kindergartners when he didn’t; that he killed immigration reform when it was actually Republican bigots; that our economic problems are his fault when, in fact, McCain and the Republicans presided over the current debacle; that Obama will raise taxes on electricity and on the middle class when that is false, etc, etc.
So, what’s going on here? What’s going on is exactly what the Republicans have done for years: repeat a specific set of lies continuously to create an alternate reality, drowning out the media with its own noise machine of talking heads like Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, and many others as well as the very effective use of the official network of the GOP, Fox Noise. This chorus of compliant mouthpieces repeat these lies uncritically in a continuous stream until it becomes ingrained in those who are not really paying attention (or politically inclined to just believe it), which is a huge portion of the population. Official jabbermouths scream at the top of their lungs feigning shock and offense when any reporter or network questions the story line in an effort to stifle critical analysis.
This specific technique was how the right wing succeeded in getting Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann booted from their anchor spots for the election when they disagreed with the GOP party line. Unrelenting pressure was put on NBC and their owner, Fortune 500 company General Electric, until they caved. The kabal of right wing talking heads scream for impartiality even as they remain silent when idiots like Dick Morris, William Kristol, Sean Hannity, and Britt Hume participate in a continuous and specific campaign of mis-information, outright lies, and pre-packaged opinion from their anchor chairs.
The selling of the Iraq war in 2002 and early 2003 is the textbook example. In a deliberate and specific effort coordinated by Karl Rove, false “intelligence”, distortions, exaggerations, and outright lies were repeated word for word for months until the case for war was made. Dissenters were called terrorists, collaborators, troop haters, etc, etc. You remember the drill. The problem was that the entire case was completely false. There were no WMD; Saddam was not collaborating with Al Qaeda. In fact, the reality was that the sanctions against Saddam really were working. Iraq was no threat to us.
As well, McCain has gotten a complete pass from the press on the incomplete disclosure of his medical records and the source of his wealth, his wife, Cindy’s, incomplete tax returns. Only selected portions have been released and the compliant press unquestioningly moved on. As Frank Rich said yesterday,
“This is the same tactic of selective document release that the Bush White House used to bamboozle Congress and the press about Saddam’s nonexistent W.M.D. As truthiness repeats itself, so may history, and not as farce.”
How true, how true.
